REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS IN MATHEMATICS Non-Thesis Option: 1. Passing the Candidacy Examination. This examination is taken shortly after the beginning of graduate studies, and prior to the completion of 12 hours of coursework. 2. Completing the Following Coursework (with a cumulative grade index of 3.00): I. Completion of 80:141 and 80:162. Students whose undergraduate program does not show completion of these courses or their equivalents will be expected to take these courses as part of their MA program. At most one of these courses taken to fulfill this requirement can be applied to the elective courses listed below. Courses taken to satisfy BA requirements may not also be counted among II and III below. II. Required (20 hours): 80:155 or 80:189, 80:201, 80:203, 80:240, 80:299 (2 hours). At least two of the following: 80:202, 80:204, 80:245, 80:266. III.Electives (12 hours): Any of the courses listed in II above that were not used for the requirements there, or from among the following: 80:141, 80:149, 80:150, 80:152, 80:154, 80:157, 80:158, 80:161, 80:162, 80:167, 80:168, 80:169, 80:174, 80:175, 80:176, 80:178, 80:180 or 80:185, 80:181, 80:182, 80:184, 80:187, 80:193, 80:196, 80:210, 80:246, 80:263, 80:265, 80:273. TOTAL HOURS: 32-35 hours 3. Completing a Research/Scholarly Paper. 4. Passing a Comprehensive Examination. Thesis Option: Students pursuing the thesis option will complete requirements (1) and (2) indicated above, with the exception that for 2 (III), 4 hours must be taken under 80:299 (Research). In place of requirements (3) and (4), students will complete and defend a master's-level thesis.
