REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS IN MATHEMATICS: SECONDARY EMPHASIS Non-Thesis Option: 1. Passing the Candidacy Examination. This examination is taken shortly after the beginning of graduate studies, and prior to the completion of 12 hours of coursework. 2. Completing the Following Coursework (with a cumulative grade index of 3.00): Mathematics (23-32 hours): I. Completion of 80:162, 80:173, 80:180, and 80:189. Students whose undergraduate program does not show completion of these courses or their equivalents will be expected to take these courses as part of their MA program. At most one of these courses taken to fulfill this requirement can be applied to the courses listed in category II. II. At least one course from each of the categories a-c, and from two of the four categories d-g. a. 80:140, 80:141, 80:156, 80:201, 80:203. b. 80:161, 80:162, 80:240. c. 80:189, 80:265. d. 80:155, 80:167. e. 80:152, 80:154, 80:157, 80:174. f. 80:169, 80:181, 80:182, 80:263. g. 80:180, 80:185, 80:246. III.80:210. IV. One of the sequences 80:201 and 80:202, 80:203 and 80:204, 80:240 and 80:245, or 80:265 and 80:266. V. 2 hours of research, 80:299. Mathematics Education (9 hours): VI. 80:289 Seminar: Mathematical Connections Laboratory, 80:290 or 80:291, 80:293. TOTAL HOURS: 32-41 hours 3. Completing a Research/Scholarly Paper. 4. Passing a Comprehensive Examination. Thesis Option: Students pursuing the thesis option will complete requirements (1) and (2) indicated above, with the exception that for 2(V), 6 hours must be taken under 80:299 (Research). The requirements for 2(II) will then be satisfied by taking at least one course from each of the categories a-c, and from one of the four categories d-g. In place of requirements (3) and (4), students will complete and defend a master's-level thesis.
